Health and Safety Representative Training

This is a two-day course targeting Health and Safety Representatives, Health and Safety Committee Members and Senior members of the workforce. At the conclusion of this training programme, participants will have obtained the skills and knowledge needed to promote, apply, implement and support objectives of the Health and Safety in Employment Act and the Employment Relations Act. At the end of the training course, participants will have the following knowledge:

  1. An understanding of New Zealand Health and Safety legal requirements and the links between Acts, Regulations, Codes of Practice, Guidelines, Guides and Standards.
  2. A clear understanding of the relationship the Employment Relations Act has with managing health and safety in the workplace through good faith co-operation.
  3. How to promote and implement effective Hazard Management Processes which include identification, assessment of significance of hazards, development of control, implementation of controls, monitoring and maintaining records.
  4. How to encourage the reporting, recording and investigation of accidents and events of potential harm such that the causes are identified and corrective actions implemented.
  5. Basic philosophies and principles of training to prevent harm, consultation, communication and information, emergency response, injury management and rehabilitation.
  6. Encouraging facilitation within the working community alternative duties and programmes to return to normal work activities having suffered injury or illness at work.
  7. How to promote/foster constructive employee involvement, for those union and regulatory authorities participation in health and safety matters.
  8. How to effectively fulfill their role as a Health and Safety Representative.
