These courses are targeted at delegates and staff and are run on a regular basis throughout the country.

Bullying and Harassment Prevention

The aim of this one day programme is to assist participants to recognise how bullying is manifested and what the consequences of it are.

The target group for the programme is union members identified as contact people who are willing to educate and deal with issues relating to bullying and harassment in the workplace.

Level 3: Being a Leader

This one-day seminar for experienced union delegates is the follow-up workshop to the level 2 workshop.

The aim of this course is to encourage delegates to develop their leadership role in their workplace.

By the conclusion of the one-day seminar, participants will be able to:

  1. define their role as a union
  2. assist members with workplace issues, by identifying participatory resolution processes
  3. develop and support organising opportunities and techniques within their workplace
  4. undertake an organising task in their workplace
  5. increase their confidence by reflection on their practice as a delegate and valuing the newly acquired knowledge and skills.

NZNO Regional Convention

The aims of this workshop are to enable delegates

  • To be more informed about key issues facing the NZNO at the industry and workplace level.
  • To better understand the NZNO’s strategic approach to dealing with these issues.
  • The opportunity to have input into the direction being taken by their union in dealing with key issues through participation in the NZNO’s democratic structures.

Work-site Committee Annual Strategic Planning Seminar

The aim of this course is for NZNO delegates to create a plan for NZNO activity on their worksite for the next 12 months.

Effective delegates

This course aims to teach participants:

  • Principles underlying the good faith behaviour, including the Code of Good Faith.
  • Behaviours and processes that enhance the good faith relationship.
  • Concepts of the union and employee participation in the workforce.
  • The ability to assess and convey to others information exchanged during employment interactions.
  • Minimum bargaining and employment requirements.
  • The processes and structures of policy development, decision making and governance within the union.

Working with members issues

The course looks at ways to effectively resolve issues for members with their employer. It covers:

  • The principles underlying good faith behavoiur, communication skills, concepts of the union and employee participation in the workforce,
  • Lawful rights and obligations of employers and employees,
  • Participating in the institutions established (covered under the Act).

Getting members involved

The course explores how we can encourage members to take a more active role in the organisation's work at their place of work. It teaches:

  • Methods of union organising giving maximum opportunities for participation and influence to members,
  • Processes, behaviours and communication skills that lead to the creation of mutual trust and confidence.
  • Employer obligations.

Disciplinary issues

Members making a difference (formerly Striking the Balance)

This course is aimed at New Zealand Nurses Organisation nursing membership delegates. Its focus is to increase participants understanding of the issues in the workforce leading to the current nursing shortage and discuss strategies to overcome these issues in the workplace.

Level 1: Organising our Workplace

This is a level 1 workshop for newly elected union delegates. Education will be directed to 12 participants to enable small group activities. The participants can be from a range of Public and Private Sector healthcare delivery backgrounds.

The Course aims to increase understanding of NZNO, delegate’s roles and responsibilities.

By the conclusion of the one-day seminar, participants will be able to:

  1. explain the structures of New Zealand Nurses Organisation
  2. define their role as a union delegate
  3. understand the role of members and NZNO
  4. recognise recruitment opportunities within their workplace
  5. increase their knowledge of their workplace
  6. undertake an organising task in their workplace

Level 2: Problem Solving

This is the follow-up workshop to the level 1 workshop. 

The aim of this course is to encourage delegates to develop their leadership role in their workplace.

  2. assist members with workplace issues, by relating their entitlements/obligations according to the Collective Agreement  and participatory resolution processes
  3. explain to members their rights and responsibilities in the disciplinary process.
  4. recognise organising opportunities and techniques within their workplace
  5. undertake an organising task in their workplace
  6. increase their confidence by reflection on their practice as a delegate and valuing the newly acquired knowledge and skills.

Organising in our industries

Aged Care Delegates Seminar

The purpose of this course is to enable NZNO delegates in the aged care sector to work with members to improve standards in the sector.

Bargaining Restructuring Programme

The aim of this one day programme is to increase participants' knowledge and confidence in relation to their roles as union delegates within the process of bargaining restructuring. By the end of the course participants will

  • Understand the current financial, market and structural position of their employer or industry and be able to relate that to members on their worksites
  • Understand and relate bargaining options
  • Have further developed their communication skills
  • Explain key aspects of employment legalisation related to the restructuring of bargaining, such as the multi-employer bargaining provisions of the Employment Relations Act, to members.
