- Knowledge of how LGBTI rights have been developed and the role of unions in supporting these rights.
- Skills and knowledge in problem solving and strategic planning and campaigning.

This Seminar is a cross union programme for experienced paid or elected Union Officials who are taking a role in Union campaigns.
This is an eight-hour, three-day programme.
At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to:
- Identify the principles of a strategic campaign.
- Discuss the elements of strategic campaign planning.
- Determine the strength and weaknesses of a campaign.
- Identify how involve and educate members with in a campaign.
- Develop methods to evaluate campaign.
- Produce a campaign timeline.
- Identify ways to manage risk within a campaign.

| Industry/Regional Development for Union Leaders. Course No 502 |

This course is for paid union officials, union educators and senior delegates.
This course consists of four 90 mins modules, which together comprise the
- Industry Development Course or the
- Regional Development Course
These modules will generally be taken as a whole over one day but modules 2 and 3 can be taught and credited individually as parts of other courses.
The aim of the course is to help union leadership understand their industry or region’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats in order to enable unions to participate in the broader economic development debate. |

This is a one day introductory course for union members and delegates who are new migrants working and living in New Zealand less than five years.
The aim of the course is to:
- increase knowledge around New Zealand migrant ethnicities.
- provide basic knowledge of new migrant workers rights in relation to immigration, employment legislation and collective agreements
- develop communication skills in relation to building new migrant workers union participation within their workplaces and communities, thus solving problem in workplaces using organising and collective approaches.

The aim of the one day course is to increase participants’ knowledge and skills to organise new migrant workers.
By the conclusion of the one-day workshop, participants will be able to:
- identify the different major migrant ethnicities, reasons for migration and their employment histories in New Zealand.
- identify the main issues facing new migrant workers and describe ways to overcome these.
- use key communication techniques within the workplace that is suitably for new migrants.
- develop organising plan for a specific workplace.
- identify potential delegates or leaders from new migrant workers and use task based development techniques within the workplace.
- establish relationship with different Migrant Organizations and Migrant Service Centres.

This is a five-day workshop held in two parts, three days then two days after six-eight week break, for paid union officials and senior delegates.

- Use key communication techniques within the workplace
- Describe key aspects and techniques of organising within a Union context.
- Indentify the main issues facing NZ workers form a historical and contemporary perspective.
- Indentify workplace issues to organise and educate around
- Develop an organising plan focusing on building workplace and industry leadership
- Implement strategies to assist them with planning and prioritising their work
- Develop strategies and resources to assist in the process of educating delegates and members

The aims of Supporting Diversity at Work are to increase participants’:
- Knowledge around their employment rights in relation to dealing with discrimination, and ways to increase their co worker’s, employer’s, and other’s understanding of queer workers issues.
- Skills around dealing with employment relationship problems, setting up a queer workers’ network and educating other workers in relation to LGBIT workers’ issues.

This is a two-day cross union Hui for Maori Organisers, Delegates and active members.
The aims of the Hui are to:
- continue the process of engaging nga Kaimahi Maori as active and productive participants in the workplace, therefore contributing to Rangatiratanga (building collective leadership within Maori workforces)
- increase knowledge around the motivating factors and barriers that impact Maori workforce development
- increase knowledge around the Matuaranga Maori concept (Maori models of organising) which includes an emphasis on building strategic partnerships and collaborative approaches with employers, industry and iwi to increase Maori leadership across the labour force

This is a one day training course under the Skill New Zealand Learning Representatives Project. The title of the course emphasises the importance of a work environment that supports learning, and the union reps’ role in helping to create that environment. The course is intended as an introduction to the Learning Representative role. It will be followed up by unit standards-based formal training over an extended period.
By the end of the course participants will be able to:
- Describe the opportunities for employees and employers that can arise from a Workshop Learning programme
- Demonstrate an understanding of the role of a Learning Representative and if they are elected to the role, confidence in starting to undertake that role.
- Demonstrate a knowledge of how to access the support resources available to a representative
- Describe the basic features of New Zealand’s industry training system

This course is for employees who have been elected as Health and Safety Representatives and those employees who are in training as elected health and safety reps or have shown an interest in the role.
The aim of the two day course is to increase participants’ skills and knowledge around the role of the Elected Health and Safety Rep in the workplace.
The goal of the course is to build the skills and confidence of representatives which will in turn lead to higher and more effective levels of participation in health and safety management and an employee acceptance of shared responsibility. The course aims to ensure that all participants have an understanding of the objectives, key duties and responsibilities set out in the Health and Safety in Employment Act and other knowledge and/or skills relevant to the role of the health and safety representative.

This two day course is intended to provide health and safety representatives with the skills, knowledge and competency to discharge their duties under the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992. The course reviews and builds upon the skills, knowledge and competencies developed in the approved CTU Stage 1 course around injury prevention and the role of the representative. The primary emphasis is on accident investigation and hazard identification and control with a relevant industry case study focus.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to explain or demonstrate:
- How hazards in the workplace give rise to harm
- How multiple hazards can interact to cause incidents and injuries
- Why and when to investigate incidents and injuries
- The steps of an injury and incident investigation
- The use of tools that can assist in collecting and analyzing information in an injury or incident investigation
- The sources of information and standards that can be applied to manage hazards.
- How injury and incident investigation fits into the hazard management process
- The use of tools for monitoring effectiveness of hazard management
- The role of Health & Safety reps in representing workers, finding solutions and making recommendations.

This two day course has been developed by the NZCTU, Business NZ and ACC. The course is for experienced Health and Safety Representatives.
The aim of this course is to assist health and safety representatives to work effectively in their role.
In particular the course aims to assist the representative to:
- foster positive health and safety management practices in the place of work
- identify and bring to the employer’s attention hazards in the place of work and discuss with the employer ways that the hazards may be dealt with.
- communicate effectively with employers
- represent the views of employees.
The course also aims to assist the representative to fulfill their role in promoting the interests of employees who have been harmed at work, including arrangements for employees’ rehabilitation and return to work. |
