Senior Delegate Leadership Course

This is a cross sector course for senior delegates and workplace leaders of the union delivered over four days.

The aims of this course are to

  • Identify the strengths and skills of the participants as workplace and union leaders
  • Explore models of leadership
  • To assist senior delegates and union leaders in developing their networks for the purposes of increasing membership and active participation in unions
  • Develop and practice the skills needed to engage with employers, industry figures and decision makers at a regional and national level
  • Raise the ability of workers to bargain collectively
Strengthen workers ability to utilise forms of new technology for stronger communication in the workplace, union movement and industry of origin.

Maori, Pacific Island and Women Workers Seminars

Bargaining Restructuring Programme

The aim of this one day programme is to increase participants' knowledge and confidence in relation to their roles as union delegates within the process of bargaining restructuring. By the end of the course participants will

  • Understand the current financial, market and structural position of their employer or industry and be able to relate that to members on their worksites
  • Understand and relate bargaining options
  • Have further developed their communication skills
  • Explain key aspects of employment legalisation related to the restructuring of bargaining, such as the multi-employer bargaining provisions of the Employment Relations Act, to members.

Workplace Modules: Course No 320

These four separate two hour modules are intended for delegates and active members. By the end of each module participants will be able to:

Module Title - Planning for Bargaining:

  • define their role as a union delegate, within the context of the range of bargaining options;
  • understand and relate to members the bargaining options available and the benefits, challenges and barriers afforded by those options;
  • the module will assist participants to analyze the tension/conflict between the employers needs surrounding bargaining
  • the module will assist participants in identifying key improvements for their workplace/company to move towards greater bargaining equality.

Module Title - Collective Agreement: What is in it and how can it change?:

  • know how to investigate a collective agreement issue
  • explain to a member the outcome of their investigation
  • identify organising opportunities to improve the collective agreement bargaining outcome
  • explain to members key aspects of the ERA related to bargaining, such as the multi-employer bargaining

Module Title - Organising Member Involvement at Work:

  • define their leadership role as a union delegate
  • explain to members how they can collectively participate in the workplace
  • analyze the significance of workplace issues to member participation
  • identify resources and skills required to maintain an active participation system
  • undertake an organising task in their workplace

Module Title - Encouraging Participation in Workplace Committees and Meetings:

  • identify a range of options for member participation in their workplace and or union
  • define the role and responsibilities of workplace committee members
  • explain to workers formal meeting procedures
  • develop processes that encourage member involvement in the workplace and apply this knowledge

All the modules will help to develop participants’ communication skills and confidence.

Tools of Organising Programme

  • Define their role as a union delegate and explain to members how they can collectively participate in the workplace

  • Identify resources and skills required to maintain an active participation system
  • Implement organising strategies and techniques within their workplace
  • Undertake an organising task in their workplace
  • Develop additional communication skills and increase their confidence

Issues for Women Working in a Male Dominated Environment

This one day workshop is intended for women union delegates and active women union members employed on sites where there is a low female-to-male staff ratio. The workshop aims to enable participants to:

  • Communicate with increased confidence
  • Identify a range of options for dealing with women’s workplace problems and concerns
  • Understand the structures, institutions and processes relevant to employment relations in the workplace
  • Specify strategies that will help reduce disparities for working women
  • Set an organising task that will enable participants to implement the skills they have learnt from the workshop.

Supermarket Leadership Development Program

This two day workshop is intended for supermarket delegates. By the end of the course participants should be able to:

  • Define their leadership role as a union delegate
  • Explain to members specific strategies to reduce the disparities for supermarket staff in their industry
  • Identify participatory opportunities for staff to become involved in union activities
  • Identify resources and skills required to maintain an active communication network
  • Implement organising strategies and techniques within their store
  • Undertake an organising task in their store
  • Develop additional communication skills and increase their confidence
  • Understand the current market position of their company and competitors and relate this to members in their stores

Leadership Development for Women Workers

This two day course aims to provide practical leadership knowledge and skills to women union members who have demonstrated leadership potential. By the end of the course, participants should be able to identify how they can participate as leaders within their union; develop strategies to overcome the barriers women face to becoming workplace leaders; practice effective communication techniques with groups and individuals; develop a strategy to better involve women in unions and help women resolve workplace issues.

Organising in a Changing Work Environment

The target group for this workshop is NDU delegates dealing with restructuring.

By the conclusion of the one-day workshop, participants will be able to:

  • identify participatory processes for members during restructuring across sites and industries
  • assist in the development of strategies that may address the members’ concerns
  • explain simply how economic and political change occurs, and some of the likely impacts
  • develop additional communication skills and increase their confidence
  • undertake an organising task in their workplace.
