Skills and Tools for Health and Safety Representatives

This two-day course is primarily designed for employees who have been elected as health and safety representatives under the Health and Safety in Employment Act, or who are training to prepare for such a role.

The course aims to provide health and safety representatives with the knowledge and skills needed to perform their functions under the HSE Act. The course covers the following 10 elements:

  1. Why health and safety needs to be managed
  2. The Health and Safety in Employment Act
  3. Employee Participation and Good Faith
  4. Working with OSH Services
  5. Hazard Management (including issuing of hazard notices)
  6. Incident Reporting and Investigation
  7. Information, Training and Supervision
  8. Emergency Response
  9. Injury Management
  10. Promoting Health and Safety in the Workplace

Subsequent approval:

Approved under section 19G of the Health and Safety in Employment Act and approved for the purposes of issuing hazard notices under section 46A of the Act.

Skills & Tools for Health & Safety Representatives – Stage 2

This two day course is intended for Health and Safety representatives who have already attended the Stage 1 training. The course covers the requirements of two NZQA unit standards (17602 & 17601), but note that the unit standard completion is optional.

The course covers the following elements:

2. Definitions and Legal Requirements
3. Hazards and Harm
4. Hazard Identification and Working with Employees
5. Risk Assessment
6. Hazard Control
7. Hazard Monitoring
8. Hazard Management Related Records and Review of Hazard Notice
9. Why Report and Investigate Accidents
10. Multiple Causation & Root Cause Analysis
11. Conducting an Investigation
