Leadership Development for Women Workers

This course aims to provide practical leadership knowledge and skills to women union members who have demonstrated leadership potential. By the end of the course participants should be able to identify how they can participate as leaders within their union; develop strategies to overcome the barriers women face to becoming workplace leaders; practice effective communication techniques with groups and individuals; develop a strategy to better involve women in unions and help women resolve workplace issues.

AUS Member Representative Training: The disciplinary process and mediation

This two-day seminar is a level 3 workshop for member representatives (senior delegates).
The aim of the course is to: 

  • Provide skills training for member representatives to screen employment issues and distinguish cases of serious misconduct.
Provide skills training for participation in disciplinary and mediation meetings

Effective Delegates Seminar

This is a one-day workshop with the aim of assisting new delegates in the understanding of their role, and to provide the opportunity to acquire the skills and knowledge to be effective in their workplace.
 
By the end of the course participants will be able to:

  • identify and discuss how the political and legal environment impacts on the workplace
  • identify and demonstrate the use of the union structures when progressing issues
  • discuss their role as a delegate and the links with membership
  • demonstrate the skills and knowledge required to build the union
  • agree to complete a task back at their workplace

AUS Member Representatives: New Member Training

This course is a two-day workshop for new members of the AUS member representative system. It is designed to introduce mew members to their roles and responsibilities, including familiarisation with employment agreements, legal issues, the Employment Relations Act, and provide training in communication skills and conflict resolution.

An Introduction to Employment Relations in New Zealand Universities

This 2 hour course is intended for University staff from overseas who are new to employment in NZ universities By the end of the course participants should gain the following outcomes

  • An introductory understanding of the NZ employment relations framework, including the Employment Relations Act 2000, the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992 and their relevance to the university workplace
  • An understanding of NZ union history and structures 
An opportunity to share their own experiences of unions overseas and to ask questions about NZ workplace relations

Maori Workload

By the end of the course, participants should be able to: describe their employment rights regarding workload, identify issues that arise for them as Maori staff around workload, and demonstrate skills around the negotiation of fair, equitable, safe and healthy workloads.

Promoting Women in the Workforce

Building Communication Networks

  • understand the structures and processes of the AUS
  • have identified the issues that arise for them as members with a role in the Communications Network
  • have developed skills around building and maintaining the Communications Network
  • have identified members concerns and discussed ways of addressing them.

Women – Know Your Union and Your Collective Employment Agreement

This 2 hour course is intended for women members of the AUS. After attending the course the participants will:

  • Have gained some increased understanding of their employment rights.
  • Have become more familiar with their CEA and be able to interpret aspects of it which are relevant to them particularly as women workers in the university sector.
  • Have gained knowledge of the union structure and processes.
  • Be able to describe the process of their employment agreement negotiations and also how women can participate in that process.

  • increase their knowledge of methods of union organisation giving maximum opportunities for participation and influence to employees.

Dignity at Work

This 3 hour course is intended for union delegates and active members, particularly young workers and those from minority groups. By the end of the course participants should:

  • Understand the nature of workplace bullying;
  • Understand and relate to members how workplace bullying impacts on their Health and Safety;
  • Be able to identify the challenges and barriers to overcome this behaviour in the workplace;
  • Have developed additional skills and knowledge in dealing with difficult people and situations;
  • Have developed additional communication skills and increased their confidence.
